MEDIA ADVISORY: USASOC to honor Son Tay Raiders
FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Sept. 30, 2014) – U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) will honor Vietnam Veterans from the Son Tay Raid, Oct. 3-5, 2014, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. and at the Kansas Speedway, in Kansas City.
Members of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) will have the
opportunity to interact with the veterans during a special presentation
and static display at the Command and General Staff College at Ft.
Leavenworth on Friday, Oct. 3. On Sunday, Oct. 5, the USASOC command
parachute team, the Black Daggers, will provide a combat equipment jump
demonstration in a special race day ceremony. They will be joined by
members of 5th SFG (A) operation detachment alpha (ODA during the
recognition ceremony.
The Son Tay Raiders were a team of trained Special Forces Soldiers who volunteered to take part in a secret mission to rescue American prisoners of war in North Vietnam. The raid was deemed a tactical success and a unique part of special operations history.
